  • OUR PROJECT: MINORITY MAP

As minorities, we are hyper aware of the many hate crimes that take place throughout the US and around us on a daily basis. Therefore, we took interest in exploring the scale of these unfortunate events and how a diverse group of minorities including the LGBTQ community, women, and different ethnic groups suffer as a result. More importantly however, we aim to make this information more easily accessible to raise awareness, promote equality, and reinforce a sense of community among marginalized groups.

    RESEARCH SOURCES

    1. In order to make general information more accessible to the public, our team used the US Census Bureau's latest poll to identify key metrics of each state. We identified what we determined to be the three biggest minority groups: the female population, the LGBTQ population and the racial population. To compare these to the general public, we reported the total population of the state as well as what each group represented as a percentage of the totoal.
    2. To increase awareness of the scale of the unfortunate events that minorities experienced, we also reported the number of hate crimes committed towards each group in the latest calendar year.
    3. As we continue developing we aim to equip people with more information about these hate crimes by linking the two most recent news articles with instances of hate crimes from each state.
